Delianov the latest Reds’ rookie keeper

Adelaide United coach Carl Veart is willing to gamble with an inexperienced trio of goalkeepers after the Reds added another A-League rookie custodian to their ranks on Wednesday.

James Delianov, who has made just one A-League appearance, has signed with Adelaide on a two-year deal.

The former Western United deputy joins fellow 21-year-old Dakota Ochsenham and Joe Gauci, 20, in the battle for the Adelaide first-choice goalkeeper’s spot vacated by Paul Izzo, who moved in the off-season to Greek club Xanthi.

Delianov's’s one A-League appearance is one more top-flight game than either Ochsenham and Gauci have played.

Veart said the Reds had tried to lure Central Coast Mariners keeper Mark Birighitti back to Adelaide and also could have signed a foreign keeper.

But he said the cost was too much and was happy to give Delianov, Ochsenham and Gauci, who has signed on a scholarship deal, the chance to establish themselves as A-League keepers.

“We know there could make some mistakes early on but we’re about giving young players opportunities here,” Veart said.

Delianov was thrilled to have the chance to work under Reds goalkeeper coach and former Socceroo Eugene Galekovic.

“I want to play as many minutes as possible and I think with Eugene guiding me, and our other keepers, the team will be in safe hands over the next few seasons,” Delianov said.

Ochsenham was between the posts in the Reds’ 2-0 win over NPL South Australia club Para Hills Knights on Tuesday night.

Veart said the Reds hoped to play another NPL club next week.

Next month, Veart will take his squad to NSW for a week-long camp that will include trials against fellow A-League clubs Western Sydney Wanderers, Macarthur FC and Central Coast.
