Arsenal’s technical director Edu appears to be on a different wavelength to Mikel Arteta with his latest message on transfer activity.
The Gunners will be looking to use the January transfer window to change their fortunes, with the north London side sitting 13 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.
While the club have been linked with players such as Borussia Dortmund star Julian Brandt, the manager’s latest comments have suggest the priority this month would be a clear-out.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s clash with West Brom on Saturday, Arteta said: "We have a large squad and we knew that. A lot of things that should have happened in the summer, we cannot accomplish for different reasons.
"There are some players that are going to go on loan and going to leave and that is the priority at the moment.
“We cannot sustain the numbers that we have in certain positions and we are looking to do that, and then we will see if we have the right opportunity in the positions where we need some more help."
But technical director Edu, who has faced heavy criticism this season, believes that a different tactic should be used to strengthen the squad in January.
Speaking at a fans’ forum before Christmas [via Goal ], the Brazilian said: “It’s quite clear what we need.
“We need a player with creativity in the middle. We don’t have that in the squad right now.”
But this does not appear to include Mesut Ozil, who has been out of the Premier League and Europa League squads this season – but has still not been matched for his chance creation rate.
While the German has left some frustrated at the top in the club, his team-mates have been “impressed” by the midfielder in training.
With exits on the horizon at the Emirates Stadium, Daily Star has taken a look at who could be shown the door by Arteta.
