Erling Haaland would be better off choosing to join Manchester City over Manchester United at this moment in his career, according to Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend. Borussia Dortmund striker Haaland is the subject of intense transfer speculation following a stunning first full season with the Bundesliga club.
Haaland has maintained his goalscoring form which attracted Dortmund to his signature in January 2020.
The Norwegian joined Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg for a fee of just £19.5million.
However, he would likely attract at least five times that amount in this summer’s window.
United wanted to sign Haaland before he signed for Dortmund and maintain a strong interest in the player.
But Townsend believes Premier League leaders City would be the best bet for the 20-year-old.
“If I was Haaland, I think Man City,” Townsend said on talkSPORT.
“They’re the ones who are in for a No. 9, they’re the best team at the minute.
“Just spare a thought for Man United, who could’ve got him for £20m when he went to Dortmund!”

City are set to be in the market for a striker, with Sergio Aguero likely to leave at the end of his contract this summer.
Former Rangers boss Ally McCoist agrees with Townsend that City would be the ideal place for Haaland.
“You’d have to think about Man City in current form, they’re the ones who look light years ahead of everyone else at this moment in time,” McCoist said.
United haven’t won a Premier League title since 2013 but have improved this season, sitting second in the table.
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol still believes the Red Devils have the pull to attract players such as Haaland.
“If somebody says to Haaland, at Man United, ‘by the way, you could be the next greatest superstar at Old Trafford to take us to a Premier League title and back into Europe’, that could be the thing that sways it.
“To become the man, instead of going and joining Man City or Liverpool or wherever.
“To go and be the kingpin at Old Trafford and take United back to the very top.
“That’s the kind of thing that would sway a young man’s head, if you ask me.
“Well, the problem right now is we don’t actually know whether [Real or Barcelona] have the money to do that.
“Manchester United I think right now in my limited knowledge have money.
“If Dortmund don’t get into Europe and Haaland decides ‘do you know what? I need to get away’, then yes every club might want him, but the ones that could afford him could be pretty slim.”
