Everton’s Tosun denies goal celebration was linked to Turkish far-right group

Cenk Tosun insists he did not celebrate a disallowed goal against Rotherham with a political gesture, according to Everton officials.

The Turkish international opened the scoring against the Championship side after nine minutes.

With the game then in the balance late on the striker thought he'd scored the winner after getting on the end of a James Rodriguez cross.

He reeled away and was accused of celebrating the goal with the sign of Turkish far-right group the 'Grey Wolves '.

Tosun's strike was ruled out by VAR but Toffees officials spoke to Tosun after the game and said he was just "celebrating and pointing to the sky".

Everton assistant Duncan Ferguson didn't see the incident so could not comment.

Abdoulaye Doucoure came off the bench to score an extra-time winner and ensure the Merseyside outfit progressed into the fourth round.

After the contest Ferguson admitted there was a sense of relief within the camp having been pegged back by the Millers.

He said: "It was a tough match so you are always fearing the worst when they got a corner in the last minute, so it was a wee bit of relief.

"We started well and Cenk took his goal well. It was a tough game for us and one we were delighted to get through."

Everton last won the FA Cup in 1995 under Joe Royle when they beat Manchester United in the final at Wembley.

They have been back to the final once since then, back in 2009, but were seen off by Chelsea.

The blue half of Merseyside could bolster their chances of silverware this season by adding new faces this month.

Juventus ' Sami Khedira, who worked with Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, has been linked with a switch to Goodison Park.
