Facundo Pellistri’s early impression on Man Utd coaches after deadline day move

Manchester United had a busy deadline day with Facundo Pellistri amongst a host of new signings.

The Uruguayan teenager, 18, signed a five-year deal with the Red Devils with an option for an extra year after being scoped out by scouts.

After making 37 first-team appearances for Penarol in his homeland, he was handed a huge opportunity to head to Old Trafford in a deal worth an initial £9million.

He has been given a tough welcome to English football and made his second appearance for the Under-21s in a 4-0 defeat to Morecambe on Wednesday night.

After the game, Under-23s boss Neil Wood was asked by MEN Sport about his progress and revealed he has regularly been involved in first-team training and making a positive impression.

Wood said: "We've not had much access to him really, he's been training with the first team a lot and training well with the first team, so it's going to take time to adapt.

"It's not easy to come to a different country and hit the ground running, you see that at the highest level.

“So it's great for him to get on the pitch and get some minutes behind him and a bit of match sharpness. It will help him in the long run.

"I know tonight [at Morecambe] is not the ideal situation for him, but it can only benefit him being out on the pitch.”

After securing his move to the club, Pellistri said: “To join a club with the history of Manchester United is a dream come true.

“I have learnt a lot at Penarol and I would like to thank them for everything they have done for me. To have the confidence of the manager is an amazing feeling and I know that working with him will be perfect for my development.

“I am coming into a squad full of great players who I will learn from every day.

“Everyone knows that Manchester United is a club that gives young players an opportunity and I am ready to work hard every day to earn those chances and prove myself in England.”
