Fans joke Kylian Mbappe ‘calls in sick’ for Lionel Messi’s hero’s welcome at PSG

Football fans joked Kylian Mbappe ‘called in sick’ on the day Lionel Messi returned to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentina captain is back in the French capital after being granted some extended leave to recover after winning the World Cup. However, the football world will have to wait a few more days for the reunion the whole world has been waiting for.

Despite the fact the 23-year-old smashed home a hattrick to keep France in the final, the Frenchman was mercilessly mocked by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who even stuck a Mbappe face mask on a toy baby and paraded it in front of Messi. However, any potentially awkward encounters between Messi and Mbappe have been postponed for now.

Messi was given a hero’s reception when he returned to the club. His PSG teammates greeted the Barcelona legend with a guard of honour to mark Messi’s return to training.

However, Mbappe was nowhere to be found in and amongst the applauding PSG stars, despite the fact he returned to training three days after the World Cup and started in PSG’s 3-1 defeat to Lens. “Mbappe called in sick lol,” one fan laughed on social media.

“Where’s Mbappe,” another added, before one other fan demanded “show me Mbappe”. Well, that fan, and any other in fact, will be able to find Mbappe in New York City.

PSG manager Christophe Galtier granted the Frenchman and fellow PSG teammate Achraf Hakimi ‘a few days off’ after their defeat to Lens. Mbappe and Hakimi, who faced off against each other in the World Cup semi-final when France faced Morocco, travelled to the Big Apple to watch NBA giants the Brooklyn Nets face the San Antonio Spurs.

“Hakimi and Mbappe will have a few days off,” Galtier said after his side were beaten by Lens. “The plan was that they could play these two games. They will now recover.”

Whether Mbappe, Hakimi, and Messi will be in the same team for PSG’s upcoming matches against FC Chateauroux in the French Cup and Angers in Ligue 1 remains to be seen.
