Five dream Liverpool signings that Michael Edwards can complete in 2021

Jurgen Klopp has overseen a dramatic and stunning turnaround during his five years as Liverpool boss. After replacing Brendan Rodgers in October 2015, Klopp went about transforming the playing squad to play the “heavy metal” football that made his name with Borussia Dortmund.

And since then, the results have been magnificent, firstly the Reds won the Champions League in 2019, before ending the club’s 30-year wait for a Premier League title.

The early signs suggest Liverpool could retain their top-flight crown, with Klopp’s men just one point off the top.

Between Klopp and sporting director Michael Edwards, the champions have developed an unerring reputation in the transfer market.

This campaign has seen Liverpool suffer an injury crisis, but reports have suggested that transfer plans will wait until next summer.

With that in mind, Express Sport takes a look at some of the targets Klopp and Edwards could bring to Anfield in 2021.

Kylian Mbappe

#Mbappe2020 was one of the most common things seen on Liverpool Twitter over the last 12 months. And although they’ve missed that deadline, they could still look to bring in the PSG star.

Recent reports have claimed that the Reds are so intent on securing the superstar in the future that they are already plotting to raise funds from their current crop of stars to make the deal possible.

It has been claimed the forward will look to leave PSG next summer, putting a host of Europe’s top club on red alert.

They will face intense competition from the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, but should they sign the Frenchman, it could usher in a generation of dominance on Merseyside.

Dayot Upamecano

Klopp is down to the bare bones at centre-back, following injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Goez. But the Reds are prepared to wait to sign a defender, with Fabinho expected to drop into the back-four.

Long term though, the Reds could look to sign an ‘A-list’ star to partner with Van Dijk.

Upamecano would fit the bill after bursting to prominence with RB Leipzig.

The 22-year-old has a release clause €38million release clause that becomes active at the end of the season – that could be when the champions make their move.

Ben White

Another name believed to be on the club’s defensive shortlist is the Brighton star. After impressing on-loan with Leeds in the Championship, the 23-year-old has contined to shine in the top-flight.

White has recently signed a new contract with the Seagulls and could cash in if a substantial bid is made.

Ozan Kabak

Edwards reportedly believes that signing players from the continent will ensure the Reds get more value for money.

Schalke defender Kabak could be available for around £35million.

The Turkish international has impressed in the Bundesliga and at just 20, could be a lynchpin of Liverpool’s defence for a decade.

David Alaba

The Liverpool transfer guru helped pull off one of the masterstrokes of the summer window, signing Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich.

Due to issues with his contract, the Spaniard was signed for just £27m. And 12 months on, Edwards could plot a second raid on the European champions.

Alaba’s contract at the Allianz Arena exipires next summer and after several rounds of talks, he looks set to leave on a free.

The versatile Austrian can play anywhere along the back-four and could provide valuable depth to the squad.

Liverpool could get a pre-contract agreement done in January, before the 28-year-old arrives at the end of the current campaign.
