Harry Maguire details change in Man Utd mentality before Liverpool showdown

Harry Maguire believes the relentless rise in form which has seen Manchester United emerge as potential title contenders is a result of a mentality change at Old Trafford.

United are gearing up for a pivotal trip to arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday, which could see them open up a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men currently sit three points clear of the champions having embarked on an 11-game unbeaten run following their 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal in November.

A victory at Anfield would make the Red Devils title favourites, just one month on from a Champions League group stage exit which plunged Solskjaer’s future into doubt.

Maguire puts United’s impressive run of form down to a shift in mentality, with the squad now expecting nothing less than to win every single game.

The Red Devils captain said: “Playing for Manchester United and playing with no pressure don’t come in the same sentence.

“We’re the biggest club in the world, and whatever anyone says on the outside, we go into every game not only wanting to win, but expected and expecting to win.

“That’s the mentality you have to have in this dressing room – winning at all costs. It’s something we have changed round, we’ve made that the environment we’re in now.

“We put bigger pressure on ourselves than anyone else can do – not just to win games, but to win things."

Another factor in United’s resurgence is the formidable partnership Maguire has developed with Eric Bailly at the heart of United’s defence.

The Ivorian is enjoying his most regular run in the starting XI for many a year, replacing Victor Lindelof as Maguire’s first-choice partner at centre-back.

“With Eric, he’s back and playing really well since he’s been free of injury and we have formed a really good partnership,” the England international said.

“It’s a nice partnership that has blossomed over the last month.

“It’s a great position to be in because we have three top centre backs, because there’s Victor (Lindelof) as well – and Axel Tuanzebe is pushing as well.

“That can only push you to perform even better.”

Lindelof is a doubt to feature for United at Anfield on Sunday, while Anthony Martial could also miss out through injury.
