The United States are hoping to get out of Group B at the 2022 World Cup and win a place in the knockout bracket. Here’s what Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT need to do to qualify, and the page will be updated as this group progresses.
– Prediction odds: What does the USMNT need to advance?
Friday (2 p.m. ET): England vs. United States
Tuesday (2 p.m. ET): Iran vs. United States, Wales vs. England
– Scenarios: Permutations for all eight groups
– World Cup 2022: News and features | Schedule | Squads
United States: Cannot qualify or be eliminated on Friday whatever the result vs. England.
A win over England will mean the USMNT would definitely qualify with a win/draw vs. Iran on Tuesday; could also qualify with defeat on Tuesday as long as England do not beat Wales that day.
If the US draw with England, they must beat Iran to qualify.
If the US lose to England, they must beat Iran and hope Wales lose/draw vs. England. If Wales win, second place would be decided firstly on group goal difference.
– Explained: How the World Cup tiebreakers work
England: Will qualify for the round of 16 with a win against United States, but Iran’s win over Wales means they cannot win the group today.
Iran and Wales cannot qualify or be eliminated on Friday. Wales must beat England to have any chance of qualifying.
