How Chelsea players feel about Frank Lampard replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga

Several Chelsea players would privately welcome Frank Lampard signing a new goalkeeper as they have lost faith in record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga, according to reports.

Kepa’s Chelsea career is hanging by a thread, with Lampard still unconvinced by the £72million shot-stopper and considering bringing in a new signing to be his No. 1 at Stamford Bridge.

Much was expected of Kepa when he completed a record-breaking move from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 but his performances have not been up to scratch, with Chelsea conceding 54 goals in the Premier League this season – more than Crystal Palace and Brighton.

An incredible public spat with former Blues boss Maurizio Sarri during last year’s Carabao Cup final has also overshadowed his Chelsea career, which could now come to an abrupt end this summer.

Lampard made his feelings known by dropping Kepa for Chelsea’s final Premier League match against Wolves – when Champions League qualification was on the line – and leaving him on the bench for last weekend’s FA Cup final.

According to The Athletic, is it not just Lampard who has lost confidence in Kepa, with some Chelsea stars also losing faith in a player who has become Spain’s number one ahead of Manchester United’s David de Gea.

With Kepa signing a seven-year deal at Chelsea, the club may be forced to loan him out rather than get the 25-year-old off their books entirely.

Ashley Cole, the former Chelsea and England defender, believes Lampard faces a difficult situation with Kepa.

Speaking ahead of the FA Cup final, Cole told BBC: ‘It’s tough. There is that price tag on him.

‘He came in for £70-odd million. It’s very high, so what do you do? I can’t see there being too many buyers, not for his quality but in terms of that price. It’s going to be difficult.’

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich, meanwhile, believes Kepa should leave Stamford Bridge despite his long-term deal at the club.

He told Sky Sports: ‘Obviously Lampard and Kepa don’t see eye-to-eye. He seems to be looking for a new goalkeeper but his transfer fee could be a problem.

‘I think the amicable thing would be to make sure Kepa is sold and goes to another club and Chelsea can then move on with someone else.’
