How Dortmund sacking Lucien Favre may affect Jadon Sancho to Man Utd transfer

Borussia Dortmund have parted company with Lucien Favre following their 5-1 thrashing at home to Stuttgart on Saturday – which could affect Manchester United in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho.

Favre has been sacked by Dortmund after the five-goal drubbing against Stuttgart at Signal Iduna Park, which was their third defeat in five games.

The German club are only five points adrift of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich in fifth, while they also finished top of their Champions League group.

Nevertheless, the Dortmund hierarchy were clearly left enraged by Saturday’s humiliation and have therefore handed Favre his P45.

According to journalist Gianluca di Marzio, former RB Salzburg coach Marco Rose is the frontrunner to replace Favre in the Signal Iduna Park hot-seat.

Dortmund chiefs will be hoping their next appointment can provide the typical new-manager-bounce and turn their form around ahead of upcoming matches against Werder Bremen, Union Berlin, Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig.

And one man who could benefit from the change in coach is Sancho, having found life difficult under Favre so far this season.

The England international, who was heavily linked with a lucrative move to United in the previous transfer window, has only registered three goals and six assists in 15 appearances in 2020/21 – with no goals coming in Bundesliga.

Favre was critical of Sancho last month, suggesting the intense transfer speculation over the summer could have been a factor in his struggle for form.

He said: “Every player has slow periods. There was a lot of talk about Jadon in the summer, something like that can also have an influence.

“But no player is consistently in top form for a year, that's impossible. You have to accept that.”

Should Sancho rediscover his best form and flourish again under Dortmund’s new manager, it could become even more difficult for United to prise him away from Germany.

The 20-year-old was already valued at a staggering £108million in the last transfer window, an asking price United failed to meet amid the coronavirus crisis.

With three-and-a-half years still to run on his contract, Dortmund will only increase Sancho’s price tag if he takes his game to another level under Favre’s replacement.

Whoever lands the job will also be desperate not to lose him, given his tally of 20 goals and as many assists helped Dortmund secure a second-place finish in Bundesliga last season.
