Ian Wright names defender Man Utd must buy and demands Ed Woodward signs Jadon Sancho

Manchester United must sign Jadon Sancho and RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, according to Arsenal legend Ian Wright. United’s interest in Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho has been the transfer saga of the summer so far. Dortmund want £108million for the 20-year-old but the Red Devils are yet to even submit an official offer.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward deems £108m as too high in the current climate.

But Wright says it is a signing United must get done quickly and not wait for another defeat similar to the 3-1 Premier League loss to Crystal Palace last Saturday.

“We look at this Jadon Sancho [situation] – sign Jadon Sancho,” Wright said on the Kelly & Wright Show.

“Sign Jadon Sancho because what are you doing now? Are you going to wait and get another hammering and then do it in desperation?

“He’s worth the money for what he’s done, you missed out on Erling Haaland simply because they were saying ‘we’re not sure’ and look what he’s done since.”

Meanwhile, Wright cannot believe United have not tried hard to sign Upamecano.

French centre-back Upamecano starred for Leipzig in their run to the Champions League semi-final last season.

And Wright says the performances of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof against Palace should have sped up a move for the Bundesliga star in recent days.

“Upamecano, 21, he’s probably desperate to go somewhere like a Manchester United,” Wright added.

“Why aren’t they doing that deal? Especially when you watch how Harry Maguire and Lindelof played the other day.

“Why aren’t they doing that deal? Why aren’t they going and doing that deal? Why aren’t they doing the Sancho deal? They are dithering.”

Elsewhere, former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley claims Woodward is to blame for the “shoddy” running of United.

Burley told ESPN FC: “As I said all along, I don’t think he’s going to be in that job long term and he’s certainly not being helped by Ed Woodward, who at the moment is just running this place so shoddily from a football perspective it’s scary.

“They’re miles behind City and Liverpool. ‘We’re going to be signing Sancho, we’re going to be signing this player, we’re going to be signing that player’ – no, absolutely diddly squat apart from Donny van de Beek.

“For Manchester United, not good enough.”
