Joey Barton has promised he will practice his Bristol accent after landing the job with Rovers – and took the chance to have another dig at Jadon Sancho.
The 38-year-old has taken the job at the Memorial Stadium, just weeks after leaving Fleetwood Town in the latest turn of his incredible career.
But one of the Englishman’s most famous moments came off the pitch, speaking to French press in English with an accent when he introduced at Marseille in 2012.
And Barton has promised that fans will get to see how he does with the iconic Bristolian accent during his stint with the League One side.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the new Rovers boss said: “As you know, it’s one of the things I like to do when I move into a new club. I like to submerge myself in the local culture.
“At some point, I will no doubt develop the accent and hopefully it gets me the same amount of traction as my French one did.
“It’ll take a bit to get it as there’s a twang but I’ll get it nailed down.”
Barton is not the only one to get caught out with accents, though, as Jadon Sancho suffered the same fate during an interview live on TV.
Speaking after Borussia Dortmund’s 4-0 win over Schalke, comparisons were soon drawn between the two football stars.
It saw Barton write on Twitter: “Don’t worry @Sanchooo10, happens to the best of us…”
And he used the latest interview to take another cheeky dig at the Manchester United transfer target.
“We’ve all done it,” He added.

“You hear yourself doing it when you’re on holiday, when you’re in a restaurant.
“I laughed when I saw. You just can’t help it, as stupid as I sound! Nobody’s made a bigger fool of themselves than me on my one!”
“When I saw Jadon, you’ve just got to laugh it as you just sound ridiculous.”
Sancho may not have to worry about the accent for too long, though, as United have been handed a transfer boost in their pursuit of the 20-year-old.
