Jurgen Klopp aims dig at Chelsea spending when asked about Thiago transfer

Jurgen Klopp has made light of Chelsea’s huge summer spending spree in response to a question about Liverpool’s push to sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for Thiago, with reports in Germany claiming that the Premier League champions will step up their efforts to sign the 29-year-old in the coming days.

Thiago has just one year left on his contract with Bayern and the European champions are demanding a €30 million (£26.8m) fee for the 29-year-old, who has reportedly held talks with Klopp about a switch to Anfield.

However, Klopp has refused to publicly talk up a move for the Bayern midfielder and claims Liverpool need to be cautious with their summer spending following the coronavirus pandemic.

Klopp also named Chelsea as a club with a ‘more positive outlook on the future’ in reference to their significant outlay this summer.

Having secured a £37.4 million deal to sign Hakim Ziyech from Ajax in February, Chelsea completed a £47.5m move for Werner in June and are now poised to sign Ben Chilwell from Leicester for £50m and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz for £89m.

When asked about Liverpool’s potential move for Thiago in an interview with Servus TV, Klopp replied: ‘There are a lot of interesting players out there but if someone is interesting for us I can’t say right now.

‘Due to Covid-19 you have to think five times about what you can and what you can’t do.

‘We always have to pay attention to the financial aspect. We don’t know how much money will come in.

‘Nobody knows but it seems like some other teams have a more positive outlook on the future… if you look at Chelsea for example [laughs].

‘But I am very happy with my team right now. If something transfer related will happen we have to see.’
