Last of the six Man Utd signings named and shamed by Ferdinand is set to leave

The last of six Manchester United signings slammed by Rio Ferdinand is set to leave Old Trafford, showing the extent of the overhaul Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has undertaken.

Back in January 2020, following a United defeat by Burnley, Ferdinand hit out at the Red Devils' demise, laying the blame on the club's poor recruitment.

He named and shamed six players as examples of bad business: Marouane Fellaini, Marcos Rojo, Matteo Darmian, Memphis Depay, Radamel Falcao and Alexis Sanchez.

He continued: "Around £600million has been spent on this squad, and on what? I don't see it out there. I don't see that the money, the recruitment, what has been bought.

"There is nothing there that suggests to me that this is going to be something that is laying down the foundations for the future.

"I'm sitting up here and if I'm honest, I'm embarrassed. It's embarrassing to be here. The way the team is. Not just the way the team perform but I don't see what is coming next. You don't see a pathway.

"I don't see a target being set saying 'we are going to get to that and this is how'. I just don't see it – from the recruitment.

"Put this result to one side. I'm talking the recruitment and the actual building of the squad. The foundations that are being put in place for this squad to go on and challenge at some point. Not immediately but in a couple of years maybe.

"Money has been spent willy-nilly in the last seven years. What is to show for it? I don't see what is there. You can't defend this. What has been invested.

"There are young kids in the schools around the country – they are not going to be wearing United shirts. They are not going to be wanting to come here and support United based on what we saw out there.

"It is not going to happen. Fans are walking out after 84 minutes. It's an embarrassment.

"People at the top need to look, see this and actually make changes. Put a plan in place so people can actually say 'I can see where we are going now'. I don't see it."

Solskjaer has done a great job in restoring unity at Old Trafford, and the fact that five of the six players slammed by Ferdinand have been sold speaks volumes.

The only player still remaining at United is Rojo, but the Argentine appears certain to depart this January, having been frozen out of the first team.

Solskjaer recently hinted that more players could leave this January, with centre-back Rojo very much at the front of the queue.

"You can't really say no [I don't expect more players to leave] because, in football, things just crop up. There are opportunities that we can't really say no to and, if it's the best for the club and the player, then it's something we'll look at.

"At the moment I can't update you on any of them, I don't really know where any negotiations are [up to]."
