Liverpool and Real Madrid fans BOO the Champions League anthem ahead of their clash at the Bernabeu in protest at UEFA’s handling of the chaos at last year’s final… after Reds supporters chanted ‘F*** UEFA’ before the first leg
- Real Madrid and Liverpool fans vented their fury at UEFA ahead of their clash
- It comes after Real Madrid rejected UEFA’s compensational proposal last week
- Reds fans also booed the anthem and chanted against UEFA before the first leg
Real Madrid and Liverpool supporters were heard booing the Champions League anthem ahead of the second leg of their last-16 clash at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.
The teams faced off in Madrid with Los Blancos holding a 5-2 lead from the first leg at Anfield.
However, before kick off, both sets of fans expressed their fury at UEFA following the chaos outside the Champions League final between the teams at the Stade de France last May.
That game was delayed by 40 minutes as masses of fans were targeted with tear gas by police, while others were attacked by locals and there were also dangerous issues of congestion.
The booing comes after Real Madrid last week rejected UEFA’s plan to refund fans who went to the final, branding it ‘insufficient’ – while they pledged to help supporters file their own legal claims.

It comes after Real rejected UEFA’s compensation proposal for supporters affected last week
A club statement had said: ‘The report holds UEFA responsible for the arbitrary choice of the venue and for the organisation of the final itself, whose serious deficiencies endangered the safety and physical integrity of the fans who attended the match.
‘Many of them were victims of theft of tickets and personal effects such as bags, telephones and wallets. And what is more serious, some of these fans suffered physical attacks that required medical attention and hospitalisation.
‘Given the forcefulness of the experts’ conclusions and the seriousness of the facts described, Real Madrid has been holding talks with UEFA in order to assess the compensation that would be offered to fans.
‘Our club trusted at all times that these solutions would be commensurate with the seriousness of the facts, the scope of the damages caused and UEFA’s responsibility for all of this.
‘Unfortunately, our club considers the UEFA proposal insufficient.’
The booing tonight comes after Liverpool fans were also heard booing the anthem at Anfield before the first leg, while they chanted ‘F*** UEFA’, and banners slamming the governing body were also unfurled.

Reds fans were initially blamed for the chaos before being cleared in an independent report
This included one which read ‘UEFA LIARS’, while another was adopted to ‘Champions League of DENIERS’ – in reference to UEFA originally blaming Reds fans for what went on in Paris instead of owning up to the truth.
In relation to that claim, French authorities and UEFA initially held ticketless Reds fans culpable for the shambolic events that transpired before the final.
This was a narrative which was swiftly ruled out by a number of Sportsmail reporters on the scene in Paris, despite it being widely circulated by UEFA and French officials.
But an independent report last month ruled that Liverpool supporters were officially cleared of any wrongdoing following UEFA’s investigation, which declared there was no evidence to support the agenda that was pursued by French authorities in Paris to make them scapegoats.
Real Madrid won Wednesday’s game 1-0 to progress to the quarter-finals with a 6-2 aggregate win.
