Liverpool defensive injury woes in full – when stars are back as crisis deepens

Liverpool are now without five of their first-choice central defenders after losing Jordan Henderson in the Merseyside derby with Everton.

The skipper's withdrawal midway through the first period means he joins Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Fabinho and Joe Gomez on the sidelines.

Fans in the red half of Merseyside will be hoping Henderson makes a swift recovery.

But even if that is the case, Liverpool have still suffered an incredible amount of bad luck when it comes to injuries this term.

So just how does Jurgen Klopp's injury room look at present with the Reds desperately trying to reach the top four?

Henderson went down, grimacing, during the first-half against Everton and was swiftly replaced by Nathaniel Phillips after initially trying to continue.

It appears the England international could be out with either a groin or hamstring problem after clutching both as he exited the Anfield turf.

Van Dijk was in attendance this evening, taking his seat in the stands before kick-off.

The Dutchman has been out of action since being on the end of a crunching Jordan Pickford tackle in the reverse fixture with Everton earlier this season.

Speaking earlier this month, Klopp addressed the Van Dijk, stating: "Nobody really told me there's a chance for Virgil to play in this season again.

"I don't want to say that's absolutely impossible but it's not likely."

Fabinho initially took Van Dijk's place in the heart of the defence.

But the Brazilian soon joined his counterpart on the sidelines before returning to action in recent weeks.

However, Fabinho is back on the treatment table after a setback earlier this month.

But the injury-prone man-mountain was soon ruled out along with his defensive colleagues.

After suffering a few niggles in games over Christmas, Matip was recently ruled out for the season with an ankle problem.

"Unfortunately, we found out now that Joel will be out for the rest of the season," Klopp confirmed on February 1st.

    Another one? Go on then.

Soon after Van Dijk's season-ending injury, Gomez followed him by being ruled out for the rest of the campaign with a knee problem.

No timescale has been put on his return.

Although Gomez did join Van Dijk for a gym session earlier this week.

Veteran James Milner has also been struck by the injury curse of late.

The versatile Anfield hero suffered a hamstring problem earlier this month and was not risked for the Everton clash.

However, Milner is expected back in the near future.
