Liverpool have been warned they face missing out on Jude Bellingham if it comes down to a bidding war. Former Reds winger Steve McManaman has doubts over whether his old club will be able to financially compete with other potential suitors.

Bellingham is set to be a top target for Liverpool next summer. The 19-year-old has already established himself as one of the best players in Bundesliga and could play a big part for England at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

Bellingham came through the academy at Birmingham and made his senior debut at just 16. McManaman believes he may have a preference over the club he wants to join if he does return to England.

However, he has questioned whether Liverpool could afford him, claiming £130million would be a huge amount for such a young player. McManaman wrote in his column: “A lot of it will be down to personal preference. If he continues his trajectory then he will be good enough for whichever club that gets him.

“Secondly, it’s dependent on whether he wants to come back to England. He’s a Birmingham boy, so I don’t know whether he’s got a particular fondness for certain clubs or players.

“He’d fit in any team. If it comes down to a bidding war then I think that’s a reason why Liverpool may miss out.

“We just have to wait and see what his value is next summer. £130m is ridiculous money for a young player.”

Bellingham has already won 15 caps for England and made his 100th appearance for Dortmund in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Schalke. McManaman says the player’s representatives will already be lining up the clubs who could sign their client at the end of the season.

He added: “He’s certainly the type of player that Liverpool would be interested in and most teams for that matter. No doubt there’s been lots of teams who’ve been in conversation with his agent.

“They’ll already be whittling down the ideal club for Jude. The most important thing for Jude is that he has a good season.

“Prospective buyers will be looking closely at how he plays this year, so he will have to impress. Hopefully he can have an impressive World Cup with England as that will greatly benefit his future.”
