Liverpool need Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak now with Joel Matip out for the season

Liverpool have completed a double swoop after a dramatic 72-hour transfer dash to solve their defensive crisis.

The Reds tied up a £1.6m deal to sign Ben Davies from Preston with Ozan Kabak joining on loan from Schalke.

The Turkey international joins for a loan fee rising up to £1.5m with the option to make it permanent for £18m at the end of the season.

Davies' signing comes as a big shock as the Reds picked him up from the Championship club under the noses of Celtic.

Kop boss Jurgen Klopp said: “What I like about Ben is it just shows that each situation creates opportunities.

“I think it’s probably clear that in a normal transfer window, without any issues, we would not look at Preston if there’s a player for us or something like that. It’s not really likely.

“But since we saw him and since our situation got clearer and clearer – the problems we had – when we saw him we got really excited about it and thought, ‘Wow.’

“He’s a boy who played his whole life for Preston, is around the corner pretty much. We see the potential really.

“We see the quality and we see the potential as well because he’s 25 and there’s a lot to come for him. I love a lot about his play.”

Davies admitted the approach from the Reds came as a shock to him.

He said: “It’s a huge opportunity. Obviously it came as a bit of a surprise when it first came but once you start to get your head around it, the opportunity that is in front of me is incredible.

“I’d be silly to not make the most of it and learn off the players [at the club].”

Liverpool made the late move in the window for two defenders as it emerged Joel Matip is now out for the remainder of the season.

Matip suffered ankle ligament damage against Tottenham last week and Klopp has now confirmed: "He will be ready for the start of the next pre-season and finally everything will be sorted.

Praising the No.32’s efforts to play through injuries and fitness issues, Klopp added: “In the end, we have to admit that he probably did that.

“The situation is just, the season started and Joel was injured when the season started, unfortunately.

“We will wait for him. He has now the rest of this season, then the summer, then the pre-season to get ready again and he will be ready again.”

Liverpool are already without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for most of the rest of the season.

Fabinho has covered at centre-back but he is in a race to be fit for next weekend's clash with Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Kabak, 20, will come to the club on the back of a nightmare season at Schalke with the German club rock bottom of the Bundesliga after conceding 49 goals.

He also served a five-match ban earlier this season for “attempted spitting” during a game.

Kabak has come with a recommendation from former Schalke manager David Wagner, who previously worked under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.

Christian Heidel, who is a former team-mate of Klopp at Mainz and also worked at Schalke, has also spoken highly of the defender.
