Liverpool could use the January transfer window to bolster their defensive options.

The reigning Premier League champions are three points clear at the top of the table heading into the new year, but that could be closed by Manchester United on Friday evening.

Although Jurgen Klopp has insisted that he is taking no notice of the league table after 16 fixtures, their five draws across the last nine matches might be cause of some concern.

If the club are to enter the market, the centre back position looks the most likely with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez recently being joined by Joel Matip on the sidelines.

Italian outlet Corriere Granata have now reported that the Reds are interested in a move for Torino defender Gleison Bremer – but add that Everton could rival an approach.

They report that although Liverpool are ‘desperate’ to find a replacement for Van Dijk, the Toffees have also been ‘knocking on the door’ regarding the 23-year-old.

They conclude that although the Premier League leaders are pressing more than their rivals, and that ‘requests’ have been sent to the player by agents at the instruction of the club.

The Brazilian defender joined Torino from Atletico Mineiro back in 2018 for just £5.3m, and went on to be a key player in their 2019/20 campaign in which he scored five goals.

Klopp said of Matip after the draw against Newcastle, which the defender missed: “The normal stuff with these kind of injuries, [he will be out for] around about three weeks.”

Before adding of the result: “Not scoring is concerning if you don’t create.

“If you do create, it’s OK. We should have won at least 1-0 and we have to accept that.

"I am happy with things I saw tonight. I can work with this performance. That’s why I’m OK.

“The boys are frustrated and rightly so.

“But not about the performance. I think we had four 100 per cent chances and we didn’t accept them.

"We created some unbelievable chances but the opposition was good.

"Newcastle defended with all they had. It was a really good game but not the result we wanted.”
