Liverpool warned of 48-hour deadline to save season ahead of crucial calls

Liverpool have been warned by former Red John Aldridge that they have 48 hours to save their season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have slid out of the Champions League qualification spots after a miserable run of form.

Liverpool have been hit hard by injuries this season, especially in defence, where they currently have no senior centre-backs.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been sidelined for months and don’t appear to be nearing a return, while Joel Matip is once again struggling with injuries.

Anfield chiefs have taken a hard-nosed approach during this month’s transfer window to the situation, opting not to look to the market to solve their issues.

However, ex-Reds striker Aldridge has urged his former club not to be so stubborn and sign a centre-back before the transfer window slams shut on Monday night.

“The clock is ticking for Liverpool as they have just 48 hours to save their season,” Aldridge told the Irish Independent.

“That might sound like a dramatic opening, but the reality is that Jurgen Klopp will not be able to keep his hopes of success alive this season if a defender – and the right defender – is not signed before tomorrow’s transfer deadline.

“I stated as far back as November that Liverpool needed to have a centre-back lined up and ready to play on January 1st.

“The events of the last few weeks confirm I was right in that assessment.”

Fabinho is also nursing an injury currently, meaning Jordan Henderson has filled in alongside youngster Nat Phillips as Liverpool’s current centre-back pairing.
