Manchester United fan Conor McGregor has revealed his interest in buying Liverpool after owners Fenway Sports Group announced their plans to sell the club.

The American owners issued a shock statement after 12 years in charge confirming that they are listening to offers from potential investors. The Reds chiefs have retained Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to assist with the process of selling the club, which they reportedly value at £3.5billion.

And now UFC legend McGregor has stepped forward as a potential candidate to take over at Anfield. His interest comes despite being a huge fan of their famous rivals Manchester United.

McGregor replied to a Twitter user asking him to buy Liverpool: "I WOULD LOVE IT! I requested my information on this, yes. Soon as I heard. What a turn of events! What a club!"

The Irishman has been spotted proudly wearing a United jersey on a number of occasions, explaining his support for the Red Devils back in 2019 as: "I was more a player than a watcher back then, but Manchester United was my team.

Do you think Conor McGregor would make a good football club owner? Let us know in the comments section.

"It was only the other day I came across an old picture of myself wearing that infamous grey United jersey, which I bought with my [First Holy] Communion money at eight years of age. I see my son when I look at that photo. I’d love to know where it is now. A truly ‘Notorious’ football jersey!

“I was attracted to the success and winning mentality of the club and people surrounded by United. Irish legends like Denis Irwin and Roy Keane were dedicated to their craft and had that winning mentality. Roy Keane was one of the best midfielders European football has ever seen. Opponents would be mentally beaten before they’d even stepped on to the pitch to face him."

'The Notorious' does claim to have some ties with the Reds, however, having bizarrely expressed his support for both Liverpool and Real Madrid before the Champions League final this year.

"You know, my family are Liverpool, I'm a supporter of Liverpool," McGregor said before the game. "I'm a supporter of Real Madrid also. I hope for a great game but I'll have to go with the pool [Liverpool] for this one, I'll have to go for the 'pool."

Yet this is not the first time McGregor has voiced interest in buying a Premier League giant. He tweeted earlier this year before Todd Boehly's puchase of Chelsea: "I wish to explore this, Chelsea " in response to a picture of a WhatsApp message from an unknown contact which read: "Chelsea for sale, £3bn. Let's buy it".

McGregor's lofty ambitions to become a Liverpool owner are somewhat undermined by his £135million net worth, which means he would need huge backing from a consortium if his dreams are to come true.
