Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has been full of praise for Amad ahead of their Premier League showdown with Newcastle on Sunday. The 18-year-old made his debut in the club’s 4-0 thumping of Real Sociedad in midweek. And he looks set to play a big role for the club between now and the end of the season.

United signed Amad from Atalanta in the January transfer window, paying £37million to bring the youngster to Old Trafford.

And he was finally unleashed for the first time on Thursday night.

Amad came off the bench as United thumped Real Sociedad 4-0 in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie, with a brace from Bruno Fernandes and further goals from Marcus Rashford and Daniel James giving them a crucial win.

And Shaw, speaking to Sky Sports, has expressed a belief that Amad is like Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez.

“He’s still so young but he’s come into training and you can tell he’s got confidence,” he said.

“You can tell by the way he plays, his first touch is brilliant, the way he takes the ball and drives at players. He’s got great skill.

“Of course, like I said, very and got a long way to go. But you can tell already he’s going to be one for the future and I’m sure he’s not far away from getting a first team appearance.

“He’s a wonderful talent and already a wonderful player so I’m sure fans are looking forward to seeing him on the pitch.

“It was interesting because Harry said to me the other day that he reminds him of Mahrez when he was at Leicester.

“Really quick, skilful, agility, can turn really quick, got great skills and I would agree with Harry – he does remind me of Mahrez.

“Even the way Mahrez plays now I’ve seen the qualities that Amad already has and has shown in training.

“Mahrez is a wonderful player so hopefully if he’s any good like him it would be great for United.”

United legend Paul Scholes was full of praise for Amad in midweek, saying he ‘looks a really talented player’.

“We didn’t see much of him tonight,” he said.

“He looks a talented player. I watched the U23s last week. He scored a goal and made a couple of goals.

“He’s got real talent, a nice left foot. Is he quick? I’m not too sure I haven’t seen that yet.

“Creative player, very young at 18. Give him time and hopefully he can do.”

Meanwhile, speaking after the win over Sociedad, Solskjaer confirmed United were close to making Amad a regular in the side.

“We will make a decision after Newcastle (this weekend),” said the United boss.

“Couple of games in the reserves. Amad is getting closer. We will see how much game time we will get.”

Solskjaer used his pre-match press conference to hail Marcus Rashford, saying the England star is getting better and better.

“He is getting better and better, closer and closer. He’s improving all the time,” he said.

“The chances he gets because of his athleticism and movement.

“He was strong to hold him off for the first one but the goalkeeper came close to him and that was a hardish one.

“The second one, the goalkeeper comes out and that’s another one we’re working on.

“We had loads of practise on that yesterday actually. He’s improving and, of course, I can see we are still working. He knows what we want him to improve on and the goal was a good example of composure and technical quality.”
