Man Utd transfer news: Sancho alternative identified, competition for Koulibaly

As Manchester United prepare to face either Wolves or Sevilla in the Europa League semi-finals, preparations off the pitch continue.

Of course, the major target is Jadon Sancho, and there has been an update regarding United’s thus far failed attempts to sign the Borussia Dortmund starlet.

In their attempts to prise the young Englishman back to Manchester, United may turn to other options, as Solskjaer intends to bolster his attacking options with depth having been a major issue in the closing weeks of the season.

A defender could also be on the cards, though who this will be and what role other clubs will play remains to be seen. Here is the latest Manchester United transfer round-up.

United miss Jadon Sancho deadline

Borussia Dortmund set Manchester United an August 10 deadline to agree terms on a deal for Jadon Sancho.

That deadline has passed, and the two parties have yet to agree a fee. Sancho was with the Dortmund squad on a training camp in Switzerland on Monday – a suggestion that the German club is planning for the new season with the right-winger in tow.

According to the Daily Mail, Dortmund will sell for nothing less than £108 million. The deal can be structured in different ways, but there was discussion regarding the initial payment. United have been hesitant to meet Dortmund’s demands thus far.

With Sancho having joined the Dortmund squad on their pre-season tour, the expected deal for the 20-year-old is in serious jeopardy.

Douglas Costa a Sancho alternative?

United could turn to alternative options to add offensive firepower to the squad. One such reported target is winger Douglas Costa, who fell out of favour at Juventus this season.

Costa made 24 Serie A appearances last season, but of those, just seven were starts. Now 29, he is in the back-end of his prime and is reportedly keen to find a place where he will play more regularly. Could that be Old Trafford?

According to Tuttosport via Sports Mole, United view Costa as a potential Sancho alternative should they be unable to agree upon a payment structure with Dortmund.

Costa would cost significantly less than Sancho and will reportedly be allowed to leave Juventus as Andrea Pirlo shapes his squad following the departure of Maurizio Sarri.

In his pomp, Costa is a pacy, direct, skilful winger. Across two seasons at Bayern, he scored eight goals and provided 13 assists in a little over 3,000 minutes.

Since then, his playing time has diminished in Turin, though his one goal and four assists in 802 Serie A minutes this season suggest he can still be effective.

City competition for Koulibaly

As United continue their search for a centre-back, one name that continues to surface is Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.

And following the Italian side's exit from the Champions League, the defender has now completed the 2019/20 season and could be available to sign.

Koulibaly will need to leave Napoli if he wants to play Champions League football again next season, after they finished seventh in Serie A.

He is a potential option for Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who has already signed Nathan Ake but could be about to lose Eric Garcia.

Should United make an approach for the Napoli man, they could deliver a substantial blow to Guardiola’s recruitment plans.

However, per the Manchester Evening News, United could give rivals City a helping hand.

The report states that, while Solskjaer views the 29-year-old as one of the best in the game, United are unlikely to sign him this summer.
