Man Utd’s Donny van de Beek transfer blasted in worrying Bruno Fernandes observation

Man Utd: Diallo posts Atalanta tribute after sealing move

Manchester United added Donny van de Beek to their squad in the summer transfer window but the Dutchman has struggled for playing time at Old Trafford. The former Ajax man plays in the same position as Bruno Fernandes which has caused a selection headache for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Van de Beek is highly-rated at United but Bayer Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz has questioned why Ed Woodward moved for the 23-year-old.

He believes the Holland star can only play as a No. 10 or as a No. 6 if the pitch is made compact.

United look to stretch the game with their tactics, making it an issue for Van de Beek to get regular playing time given the form of Fernandes.

The Portuguese has scored 15 goals and provided nine assists in 25 appearances this season.

“It’s difficult for me to say because I’ve never worked there,” Bosz told The Athletic.

“Some players take more time than others, in all leagues. But I do question why Manchester United brought Donny in.

“They already have the best player in the league in that position: Bruno Fernandes.

“There is no space in their midfield for another No 10. Donny can play as a No 6, but it must be a compact pitch. If it becomes a big pitch, it’s not his game.”

Back in October Solskjaer guaranteed that Van de Beek would play a big role at the club despite not making many appearances.

He explained: “It’s nice for some players and commentators to have a little go.

“I know you’re short on time on television and have to put your point across quickly, but you have to know you don’t have to start the first three games to know you’re an important part of the squad.

“I’d be disappointed if some of my team-mates said I wasn’t important at Manchester United but I didn’t start many games.

“Donny will be very, very important for us. Don’t worry about that.”

United could be waiting for the depature of Paul Pogba to play Van de Beek more.

The World Cup winner is expected to leave the club in the summer after comments made by his agent Mino Raiola suggested his time at Old Trafford was over.

Van de Beek could fit into Pogba’s role although it would still not be ideal for the No. 10.

United return to action tomorrow night when they take on Watford in the FA Cup third round (8pm).
