Manchester United’s initial plans to sign Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo have been shelved.
The 19-year-old had been linked with a move to Old Trafford this month on the back of some impressive outings for both Independiente del Valle and at international level.
Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wasn’t expecting major deals during the January window, Caicedo would have offered some more strength in depth for United as well as a chance to progress for the player.
However, it seems as though negotiations were made overly complicated, which has caused a problem.
The MEN report that United were working on a deal worth in the region of £5m back in December, but claims in South America of an official agreement were wide of the mark.
They add that talks were compromised by various intermediaries, and were told by a source that things got too messy which ended their chances of an agreement.
Negotiations were described by another source as being a 'clusterf***’, putting it on ice.
That collapse comes after Amad Diallo joined United from Atalanta in a deal that could rise to cost the Red Devils an astonishing £37m, with the youngster the first to be registered in the UK under post-Brexit rules.
Solskjaer said of his new player: "We have had all the paperwork, I can't see any obstacles. He's coming.
"I hope very soon he will be with us.
"I’m very excited about bringing him in, I think he’s shown a few times his qualities.
"Of course he has to learn to play in England, that’s a different level of football.
"We’ll give him time to develop and to express himself.
"Apart from that, I’m not really thinking too much on what we’re going to do with players [in the January transfer window]."
