Timothy Fosu-Mensah has shared a video of the lovely send-off he received from Paul Pogba and Eric Bailly at Manchester United’s training ground after Bayer Leverkusen announced they had completed a deal for his signature on Wednesday.
Fosu-Mensah managed just nine first-team appearances in all competitions for United over the last two seasons and was keen for a fresh challenge away from Old Trafford in order to secure more regular game-time.
It’s understood Leverkusen and United agreed a deal worth around £1.5million – despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s efforts to keep hold of Fosu-Mensah – and the 23-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year contract at the BayArena.
The Netherlands international could make his Bundesliga debut as early as Friday when Leverkusen travel to Union Berlin.
Fosu-Mensah had been with United since 2014 – when he arrived as a top prospect from Ajax’s academy – and the Dutchman naturally formed close bonds with so many team-mates and people connected to the club across his six-and-a-half year stay in the north west.
Two of Fosu-Mensah’s closest friends in the United’s first-team squad, Pogba and Bailly, were particularly upset to see him leave but passed on their best wishes and said their farewells as the versatile defender headed for the exit door at Carrington.
In a short clip uploaded to Fosu-Mensah’s Snapchat, Pogba said: ‘My brother from another mother! Look at the video, this is memories! Catch the moment.
‘Blessings to you, bro. You know what, I don’t watch a lot of Germany but now I put this on straight!
‘We pray for you, we’re gonna miss you too much! Who’s gonna make me laugh? Him?! [Bailly]
‘This day, we will remember this.’
Fosu-Mensah revealed that extensive talks with Leverkusen chiefs Simon Rolfes and Rudi Voller convinced him there were ‘great prospects’ at the club and persuaded him to complete a move away from the Theatre of Dreams this winter.
‘In the last few days I’ve talked a lot with the coach, and conversations with Simon Rolfes and Rudi Voller have convinced me that there are great prospects in Leverkusen’ Fosu-Mensah said.
‘Both for me personally and for us as a team. That will be really exciting.
On Fosu-Mensah’s arrival, Rolfes said: ‘He is a technically adept, fast and physically strong defender who can be used both as a right-back and in the centre.’
