Martial hailed as a ‘Ferrari’ after starring role in Man Utd’s Europa League win

Owen Hargreaves led the praise for Anthony Martial after the Frenchman's starring role in Manchester United's Europa League triumph on Monday night.

Bruno Fernandes' extra-time penalty edged the Red Devils through to the Europa League semi-finals as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side toiled to victory against gutsy FC Copenhagen.

Marcus Rashford saw a goal ruled out for offside before Fernandes hit a post in the second period, with Anthony Martial superbly denied as regulation time wound down.

The match was on a knife-edge as play headed into extra time, which was just five minutes old when Fernandes scored from a spot-kick won by Martial.

And Hargreaves has heaped praise on Martial, who has enjoyed arguably his finest season at United with 23 goals in all competitions.

The former Red Devils ace told BT Sport: "Everyone's got an opinion on Martial. He's a Ferrari. He just looked like a £100million player."

And Hargreaves wasn't the only one impressed, with Paul Scholes adding: "He's turning into a No 9 more and more every game I watch.

"He's normally a brilliant finisher but tonight the finishing wasn't quite there."

Another former United hero, Robin van Persie, was also in awe of Martial's performance and highlighted the Frenchman's importance under Solskjaer.

The Dutchman added: "Martial always have an eye for his team-mates and that's what sets him apart from the others.

"That's why I think he's a world class player."

Indeed, it was a match that needed Martial and Co to step up after coming up against a tough opponent in Cologne.

An overturned penalty, two disallowed goals and efforts off the woodwork frustrated the Old Trafford giants during a goalless 90 minutes in which the Danish side looked dangerous despite failing to register a shot on target.

Fernandes would save the day from the spot in extra time, securing a 1-0 victory and a last-four date against Wolves or Sevilla back at Stadion Koln this Sunday.
