Man Utd: Pogba hones skills amid exit talk
Paul Pogba’s agent, Mino Raiola, didn’t even know what type of player the Frenchman was when he issued hefty wage demands to Sir Alex Ferguson, it has been claimed. Ferguson allowed Pogba to leave Manchester United back in 2012 after his agent maneuvered a move for him to Juventus.
Raiola and Ferguson had a rocky relationship stemming from the beginning of the super-agent’s time working with Pogba.
The super agent came onto the scene in 2012 when United were trying to negotiate a new contract with Pogba.
The French midfielder joined Juve on a free transfer after rejecting a new deal from United, only to re-join United for a then-world record fee in 2016.
Since then, however, Raiola has been a constant thorn in United’s side, and recently poured further doubt on Pogba’s future by saying his time at Old Trafford was over.
But according to Antonio Cassano, the pair were engaged in a verbal confrontation back in 2012 when they first met.
Raiola apparently made a fresh demand to United over Pogba’s new proposed contract, which Ferguson deemed to be unnecessary.
The United manager then apparently asked Raiola to explain what Pogba was like as a player, but the agent couldn’t offer up any reply.
Cassano explained: “I know that when he still had to debut with Manchester United, Mino Raiola went to Ferguson asking him for a lot of money to get him to sign the contract.
“Ferguson asked the agent if he knew what kind of player was Pogba and Raiola, number one of the prosecutors, replied by saying no.
“He cared little, those were their requests and if they were not met they would go away.
“Without batting an eye, Ferguson ruled that Pogba could also go away.”
Writing in his autobiography, Ferguson described his first meeting with Raiola as a “fiasco” that their relationship never recovered from.
He explained that they never got on, and that in part was what led to Pogba swapping Manchester for Turin.
Ferguson said. “We had Paul under a three-year contract, and it had a one-year renewal option which we were eager to sign.
“But Raiola suddenly appeared on the scene and our first meeting was a fiasco.
“He and I were like oil and water. From then on, our goose was cooked because Raiola had been able to ingratiate himself with Paul and his family and the player signed with Juventus.”
