Jose Mourinho's new mural in Rome has already been vandalised by fans, with a cheeky Maurizio Sarri-flavoured twist.

Mourinho will take over as the new Roma boss for next season, replacing fellow countryman Paulo Fonseca, who is being linked to the vacancy at Tottenham.

And the controversial Portuguese, who has always divided opinion, was immediately honoured with a mural of himself riding a Vespa in Roma colours.

The mural, which is located in the historic Roma stronghold on the corner of Via Giovanni Branco and Via Pietro Querini in the Testaccio quarter, was painted by Roman street artist Harry Greb in the style of Gregory Peck from A Roman Holiday.

However, it has taken a new twist, with rivals Lazio defacing the artwork following the announcement of their new manager, Maurizio Sarri.

The former Chelsea and Juventus boss replaced Inter Milan-bound Simone Inzaghi on Wednesday, marking his return to management.

And one Lazio fan celebrated by impressively painting Sarri's head blowing smoke, completely covering Mourinho's face.

A later addition also showed the number 71, referencing Senad Lulic’s winner in the 2013 Coppa Italia final between the two sides.

The tension already seems to be building between Rome's two sides then ahead of next season, with some fiesty clashes to look forward to between Mourinho's Roma and Sarri's Lazio.

Mourinho is understood to be close to agreeing his first signing for Roma, with Granit Xhaka set to leave Arsenal for the Italian capital.

The Swiss, who has been at the Emirates for five years, is expected to sign a four-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico.

The transfer fee for Xhaka is a reported £15.5million, and could be the first of a number of departing players in north London this summer.
