Celtic star Nir Bitton was sent off for taking down last man Alfredo Morelos with the striker looking to get clear on goal. It handed Rangers an advantage for the last 30 minutes at Ibrox.
Celtic had dominated the match up to the incident which forced Neil Lennon to reshape his side.
Just moments later Callum McGregor put through his own net to give Rangers the lead and help Steven Gerrard take a giant step towards the title.
On the red card former Scotland striker Billy Dodds thought it was a stupid challenge from Bitton.
He said: “It’s crazy from Bitton to get that tight. I’m not sure Ajer would have got back as it looked like Morelos was getting a shot on goal.”
Rangers: Steven Gerrard previews Celtic clash
Rangers will go 19 points clear in the table if they beat Celtic in the Old Firm derby.
It would take a disaster for Gerrard’s side to not win the title from that position.
Ahead of the match the former Liverpool man insisted even a win wouldn’t wrap up the title though.
“No, not at all,” he said. “I’d be very happy with the three points but I would remain balanced and humble with my feet on the ground.
“It’s January, there are many tough challenges ahead and hurdles we need to get over.
“So whatever the result is we will move forward in the best possible way. We obviously want to do all we can to try and take this opportunity.
“We want to stretch our lead, of course we do. But if we manage to do that then certainly no one will be getting carried away.”
Rangers took off Morelos for the last 15 minutes after he was booked and tempers started to flare in the match.
