Paul Scholes wasn’t bothered when Ander Herrera left Manchester United – and the club legend has been proved right.
The Spaniard packed his bags in the summer of 2019 and opted to sign for PSG.
Some members of the Old Trafford faithful were sorry to see him go. Scholes, however, suggested fans didn’t need to panic about his departure in the summer.
"Ander Herrera, I wouldn't worry about. I wouldn't worry about him,” he said.
And he would happen to be right. Since moving the city of lights, the Bilbao-born midfielder hasn’t pulled up any trees.
In fact, he has only made a total of 15 appearances in Ligue 1 – and only notched one goal in that period.
He even played against United in the Champions League and had minimal impact on the action.
Herrera, 30, was acquired by United from his boyhood club Athletic Bilbao in 2014 and earned respect from Red Devils supporters with his all-action displays and tough tackling.
“I don’t like looking at the past but there were differences regarding the project and my importance within it,” Herrera said as he departed.
“I was very happy, I have a lot to thank the club for, the fans and also [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer.
“He did a lot for me to stay but things didn’t happen. They [United] arrived late [with the contract offer] and, by then, I’d already made the decision to play in Paris.”
United have very much moved on since the departure of Herrera and now have Bruno Fernandes operating in the centre of midfield.
But issues remain across the rest of the players in the position.
Doubts remain over Paul Pogba and whether he is the right man for United, while Solskjaer doesn't seem to know his best partners for him with Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic.
