Arsenal: Arteta believes team have 'taken handbrake off'
Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been the club’s worst player this season, according to former Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino. Aubameyang has scored just three goals in 15 Premier League appearances so far this term. The Gabon international has continued to struggle in the last two matches despite Mikel Arteta’s side hitting a rich vein of form.
Aubameyang has struck at least 25 goals in a season for each of the last six campaigns in his career at both Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund.
But with just five to his name in all competitions this season, it looks unlikely he will reach that mark again.
Cascarino says the 31-year-old, who became the club’s second-highest earner when he signed a new contract last September, has the potential to rediscover his form.
However, the pundit says Aubameyang is currently one of the worst-performing strikers in the Premier League, behind Newcastle star Joelinton who has scored just three goals in 52 league matches since he moved to St James’ Park for around £40million in 2019.

Cascarino said on talkSPORT: “Obviously [Aubameyang’s] your highest-paid player [in the squad] and he’s been your worst player this season. That’s how I’d say it.
“Why is he still there? Because he’s a talent and he’s going to get numbers.
“He’s always done it, all his career, he’s going to get goals, you can look back and say ‘he’s still got us 15 to 20 goals’. I think Aubameyang is that.
“At the moment he’s really finding it tricky, for whatever reason he is not performing well. You’d like to think that’s going to come.

“He’s not playing well. We’ve talked about centre-forwards this season who have not played well. Joelinton.
“We can go back to last season, Aston Villa had Wesley, we’ve had Sebastien Haller at West Ham who’s not played particularly well – [Aubameyang’s] been poorer than all of them for me, this season.
“What’s he got, three goals in the Premier League? But he hasn’t played well at all and he’s very capable of switching it back on.”
Following Arsenal’s 4-0 win over West Brom on Saturday, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta insisted his team cannot rely on Aubameyang to score the bulk of their goals.
Arteta said: “We can’t keep putting all the weight on Auba’s shoulders to score the goals.
“We need contributions. The midfielders need to score more and give more assists, and we need goals from our wingers as well.
“Laca [Alexandre Lacazette] is in great form and has scored five goals in his last four games, which is what we need from our strikers.”
