Piers Morgan claims Declan Rice would be 'perfect' for Arsenal

‘Come to the Emirates and be loved!’: Piers Morgan pleads with Declan Rice to join Arsenal and says the £80m West Ham target would be ‘absolutely perfect’ for Mikel Arteta’s side

  • West Ham star Declan Rice, 24, has emerged as Arsenal’s primary summer target
  • Piers Morgan believes the Hammers’ captain is ‘exactly’ what Arsenal need
  • Morgan claimed Rice would ease pressure on Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey
  • The Gunners are eight points clear and are favourites to win the Premier League

Piers Morgan has made a personal plea for West Ham captain Declan Rice to join Arsenal, claiming the England international would fit ‘absolutely perfectly’ into their squad.

Morgan, a vocal Arsenal fan, told talkSPORT breakfast the Gunners need to bolster their squad in the transfer market as Mikel Arteta’s side pursue the Premier League title.

Rice is emerging as Arsenal’s priority transfer target this summer, with the Hammers wanting a deal worth £100million – though there looks little hope of the east London club receiving that fee.

Piers Morgan has issued a plea for Rice to complete a move from the Hammers to Arsenal

Morgan suggested Arsenal need to pursue bringing Rice to the club sooner, claiming the 24-year-old would provide vital competition and cover for Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey in central midfield.

‘If we want to win the league we’ve got to get serious in this market now and bolster the reserves both in midfield and up front,’ the TalkTV host said.

‘I love Declan Rice. I’ve had this conversation with him on Twitter where I’ve begged him to come before. I think he’s exactly what we need.

‘I think that when Arsenal have our first XI starting, including Xhaka and Partey, we look really strong, but if one of those two gets injured, I think we need another big midfield enforcer who can also play a role in attack too.

Morgan claimed Rice would ease the pressure on Thomas Partey, left, and Granit Xhaka, right

‘Rice can do everything and he’s got that right mentality, the right attitude, I think he’s very much an Arteta-style player and I think he would fit absolutely perfectly into our squad.

‘So Declan, come on, I know you’re listening, Declan – come, come to the Emirates. Come and be loved.’

Morgan claimed the signing of Rice would also show the club are ‘really serious’ about winning the biggest trophies.

The Arsenal fan had previously declared himself to be ‘irrationally annoyed’ after Chelsea swooped in to secure the signing of Mykhailo Mudryk, labelling the Gunners failed pursuit as a ‘fiasco’.

Morgan admitted his frustration at Arsenal missing out on the signing of Mykhailo Mudryk

Mudryk had looked destined to join Arsenal but then completed an £88.6million move from Shakhtar Donetsk to the Blues.

‘How can this be happening? Ridiculous that Arsenal let this transfer saga drag on so long we’ve apparently ended up losing him,’ Morgan tweeted. ‘I’m irrationally annoyed about this Mudryk fiasco.

‘If Arsenal want to win the League this season, we can’t faff around for weeks on key targets and then get outflanked/outbid at the last minute. Looks weak. We must buy another top class striker ASAP.’

Morgan repeated his frustration to talkSPORT, claiming Arsenal should have ‘gone the extra mile’ to sign Mudryk, before saying he would personally prefer the club to sign Rice.

Sportsmail columnist Danny Murphy has backed Morgan’s view, with the pundit claiming the potential signing of Rice would be a ‘huge move’ for Arsenal and would relieve pressure on Partey and Xhaka.

Having turned down a number of contract offers, the expectation at West Ham is that Rice will leave this summer with his current deal only running until 2024.

Rice has continued to speak of his desire to play Champions League football. Arsenal, barring a total capitulation of their season, will regain their Champions League status.

Arsenal are favourites to lift the Premier League trophy, with the leaders holding an eight point advantage over Manchester City following their 2-0 win over Tottenham in the North London derby.

Chelsea were thought to be in pole position to sign Rice this summer, with the London rivals potentially battling again in the transfer market.

As it stands, Chelsea are struggling to finish in the top four; they are currently 10th and 10 points adrift of the Champions League places.
