Police are once again hunting ex-Celtic striker Anthony Stokes after he skipped his sentencing hearing.

Stokes, 34, was due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court over a series of abusive texts he sent to his ex-girlfriend Eilidh Scott. But social workers have been unable to contact the footballer for a background report they were trying to compile on him.

Sheriff Alasdair MacFadyen ordered a warrant for his arrest following a brief hearing. He said: "These are post-conviction cases. He hasn't been responding to calls from social work and I will grant a warrant."

In 2019 Stokes pled guilty to stalking Miss Scott. He had sent her up to 100 abusive messages a day between July 2018 and February 2019, which led to him being given four-year, non-harassment orders to not contact his ex or her mother.

He breached the terms later that year with repeated attempts to get in touch with the pair. In June 2021, a warrant was issued for his arrest by Sheriff Allan McKay after he breached his bail by leaving Scotland.

Stokes was arrested by police in Northern Ireland in July and placed on a flight from Belfast to Dundee Airport. He missed another sentencing hearing last month after testing positive for Covid-19, hence why he was due to appear back in court today (September 16).

Stokes, who is currently without a club, spent six seasons at Celtic between 2010 and 2016. He started his career with Arsenal and has also had spells with Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Blackburn and Hibernian.
