Real Madrid’s summer pursuit of Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga accelerated due to concerns over two players in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad. Camavinga completed a £34.4million (€40m) move to Real in the dying embers of the transfer window.

The 18-year-old had entered the final 12 months of his Rennes contract, helping Los Blancos acquire him for a cut-price fee.

Manchester United and PSG were also in the hunt for his services this summer, but his heart was set on a dream move to the Spanish capital.

Camavinga has been making significant waves in France in recent years and is widely viewed as one of Europe’s most exciting prospects.

Real’s late decision to move for him was fuelled by uncertainty over two midfielders within Ancelotti’s current ranks.

According to DefensaCentral, Real decided to move for Camavinga after PSG’s refusal to sell Kylian Mbappe.

The La Liga giants didn’t want to continue the new season with David Alaba as the sole notable arrival.

Therefore, Camavinga’s transfer quickly came to fruition in the final days of the window.

Ancelotti had two squad members in mind when sanctioning the move – Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

Kroos suffered a groin injury in August, which ruled him out of the start of the season.

Now 31, there may be a concern that the Germany international could become more receptive to injuries now he’s in the twilight of his career.

Modric is also set for a season of more rotation than ever before, considering he turns 36 on Thursday.

Camavinga adds new energy and youth to Real’s midfield options, providing a top-class option in the present and for the future.

Ancelotti has utilised a 4-3-3 formation since his return to Real and has plenty of midfield options at his disposal.

On top of Kroos, Modric and Camavinga, Casemiro should once again be a mainstay as the side’s defensive midfielder.

Federico Valverde, Dani Ceballos and Isco are also battling for a spot in the midfield and should receive plenty of opportunities to play.

Camavinga will likely be a regular fixture in Ancelotti’s teams for the season ahead, given his ability to play as the holding midfielder or as a box-to-box player.

He should prove to be a crucial signing in Los Blancos’ bid to rise to the top of European football again.
