Zinedine Zidane has suffered a blow after Real Madrid confirmed Eden Hazard and Casemiro have tested positive for coronavirus.
Belgium international Hazard has struggled to make an impact in the Spanish capital following his high-profile move from Chelsea last year, having sustained a series of injuries and suffering from a lack of form.
The 29-year-old had only just returned to Zidane’s side following a calf injury with starts against Huesca and Inter Milan, but will now miss the trip to Valencia on Sunday along with Brazilian team-mate Casemiro after contracting Covid-19.
Real Madrid have confirmed Belgian star Eden Hazard has contracted coronavirus
The LaLiga champions also confirmed midfielder Casemiro had also contracted the virus
‘Real Madrid C. F. would like to inform that our players Casemiro and Eden Hazard have tested positive in the COVID-19 tests carried out yesterday, Friday morning,’ a club statement read.
‘All the other players and the technical staff from the first team, as well as all the employees of the club who work directly with them, tested negative in that same test.
‘The club would like to confirm once again that everyone, with the exception of Casemiro and Hazard, tested negative in the antigen tests carried out that same morning.’
It comes just six days after Madrid centre-back Eder Militao also tested positive for the virus
Hazard is now in self-isolation and will miss the trip to Valencia on Sunday as his frustrations with Madrid continue
The news comes just six days after fellow Real Madrid star and centre-back Eder Militao returned a positive test for Covid-19.
It also comes just hours after news that Hazard had been named in the Belgium squad for the forthcoming internationals despite limping off after 65 minutes during Madrid’s 3-2 victory against Inter on Tuesday.
‘Eden has been very positive on his return, he has already played two games with Real Madrid and has had a very good feeling,’ Belgium boss Roberto Martinez said.
He had only just returned to the side following a calf injury and started against Huesca and Inter Milan within the last week
He was also called up by Belgium bpss Roberto Martinez for the latest international fixtures
Hazard is the captain of the Belgium national team – who will face Switzerland, England and Iceland without him now – after Vincent Kompany’s semi-retirement last year.
Hazard scored in the 4-1 win over Huesca last weekend, which ended a wait of 392 days without a goal and was just his second for the club since joining from Chelsea, for an initial £88million in 2019.
The 29-year-old’s only other goal for Los Blancos came in October last year with a delightful dink as they beat Granada 4-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
