Rio Ferdinand compares "very exciting" Man Utd signing to Cristiano Ronaldo

Rio Ferdinand has compared Manchester United's new £37million signing Amad Diallo to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer announced he was "very excited" to welcome the teenager to Old Trafford from Atalanta earlier in the week.

Diallo arrives 18 years after fellow winger Ronaldo signed for Man United in 2003, and former Red Devils centre-back Ferdinand believes there are similarities between the duo.

"We've just bought a kid in from Atalanta and hopefully he does something," Ferdinand said on his FIVE podcast. "If you see his clips and speak to people at the club who are involved in buying him, potentially this kid could be a world-beater.

"That is the thought of Manchester United people, that this kid is one they have unearthed. I don't want to put the pressure of Ronaldo on him, but no one knew about Ronaldo when we bought him other than the people in Portugal.

"This kid seems similar in that sense and if you see his clips and the way people talk about him, the world is his oyster if he applies himself right."

Solskjaer hasn't pilled pressure on the youngster in the same was as Ferdinand, but he shares the ex-defender's view that United have signed a hot prospect.

"I'm very excited about bringing him in. I think he's shown a few times his qualities," said the Man United boss. "Of course he has to learn to play in England, that's a different level of football. We'll give him time to develop and to express himself.

"Apart from that, I'm not really thinking too much on what we're going to do with players. Of course, we're always working long-term. That's the big thing. We have targets we need long-term for the club."
