Rivaldo says Barcelona MUST sign new strikers to win Champions League

Rivaldo says Barcelona MUST sign ‘one or two strikers’ to have any chance of winning the Champions League after summer of turmoil with Lionel Messi furore, Luis Suarez thriving at Atletico Madrid and now Ansu Fati’s injury

  • Rivaldo said Barcelona have to make new signings to win the Champions League
  • Brazilian said Ronald Koeman’s lack of ‘attacking options’ is a big issue for him
  • The former Barca legend said Ansu Fati’s injury is ‘another headache’ for the club
  • Lyon forward Memphis Depay has publicly teased a move to Barcelona

Former Barcelona legend Rivaldo has implored Barcelona to sign more strikers if they are to have any chance of winning the Champions League this season.

The Brazilian has said making new attacking signings was essential to bringing European glory back to the Nou Camp, especially in light of the recent injury to rising star Ansu Fati which has seen him ruled out for four months.

‘I thought Barcelona should sign someone before Ansu Fati’s injury, so now I think it even more,’ Rivaldo told Betfair.

After a promising start to the season, Ronald Koeman has recently found wins hard to come by

‘The club should try to sign one or two strikers if they want to fight for the Champions League.’

The former Barca attacker offered a damning assessment of the position manager Ronald Koeman has been left in, with the club short of experienced quality attackers and having to rely on talented but unproven youngsters.

‘Koeman should have more options in attack to manage a line-up which is sufficiently decisive and competitive in big games, in important ties,’ he said.

‘Ansu was playing well, he was gaining confidence and becoming more influential in the team, his absence is another headache for the coach.’

Lionel Messi is out of sorts on the pitch after trying and failing to leave Barcelona this summer

Luis Suarez is is fine form after making his shock move to rivals Atletico Madrid from Barcelona

Barcelona endured a horrendous summer in which talisman Lionel Messi was reluctantly forced to stay at the club because of a contractual obligation, and the iconic player has been out of sorts all season as a result.

Top striker Luis Suarez, deemed surplus to requirements by Koeman, moved to league rivals Atletico Madrid and is thriving in the Spanish capital.

Added to that is Koeman’s lack of faith in Ousmane Dembele, who Barca were desperate to shift this summer, Antoine Griezmann’s hugely disappointing career at the Nou Camp thus far, and uncertainty over Philippe Coutinho.

Koeman has made plain his desire to bring Memphis Depay to Barcelona from Lyon, with the player himself reportedly ready to force a deal through.

But given Barca’s huge financial problems, the club will have to sell and clear some of its staggering wage bill before new signings can arrive.

It was recently reported that the club’s desperate attempts to shave £170million off their budget have been frustrated after the board failed to agree pay-cuts with players.

Barcelona are currently languishing in eighth place in LaLiga, managing just one win in their previous five games.

But the club has a 100% record so far in the Champions League, although performances have been laboured and none more so than the unconvincing 2-1 win over Dynamo Kiev last week.
