Shearer and Wright agree on Arsenal’s "best player on the park" vs Newcastle

Alan Shearer and Ian Wright agreed that Kieran Tierney was the "best player on the park" for Arsenal as they battled to a 2-0 victory over Newcastle in the FA Cup.

Tierney, 23, went into the third-round tie after scoring a stunning goal, assisting another and keeping a clean sheet in the Gunners' victory over West Brom.

The Scottish left-back continued his fine form against the Magpies, picking up another assist for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's extra-time strike and helping his side register a third consecutive shutout.

Tierney's performance left Shearer and Wright in no doubt he was head and shoulders above the other players at the Emirates.

"What about the work of Kieran Tierney? The best player on the park," Shearer told BBC Sport .

"The give, the go, it’s great to sit and watch him and the balls that he put in and the quality that he has with that left-foot in there.

"And for him to pick him [Aubameyang] out the way that he did and get in that position as I said he was the best player on the park."

Ian Wright agreed with his fellow pundit before turning his attention to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and midfielder Emile Smith Rowe, who scored the decisive goal.

"I’m pleased for him [Arteta] because he had to find a way," said the former Gunners striker.

"He brought the young lads in with their energy and enthusiasm and Emile Smith Rowe in there with his quality of that area of the field where we haven’t got too many players who can do what he does, links the play – it’s coincided with the wins.

"And again he’s finished the game today with the team that’s probably been involved in those wins so his problem is now is the depth."

Wright also reserved praise for Aubameyang, who has struggled for form this season but is benefiting from the service laid on by Smith Rowe.

He added: "That [the goal drought] has coincided with the fact that we didn’t have the quality of the Emile Smith Rowe’s putting on chances for him.

"When he does finally get his goal, it’s the kind of chance he takes, he’s in the middle of the goal, it’s a great ball in and it’s where he should be as a striker.
