Harry Redknapp has told both Tottenham and Liverpool to consider a shock swoop for Real Madrid maestro Luka Modric this summer. The Croatian veteran, who pulled the strings against the Reds once again on Wednesday night, is currently out of contract at the end of the season – meaning he could yet be up for grabs this summer.

Modric says he wants to earn a contract extension at the Bernabeu while clubs from the Middle East continue to make a play for his services.

Yet in the view of his former Tottenham manager Redknapp, Modric could still prove to be a major coup for a host of Premier League clubs including Spurs.

When discussing the 37-year-old midfielder on talkSPORT, Redknapp said: “What a player!

“Do you know you used to come in in the mornings and you’d have a piggy for piggy in the middle, after four years I said, ‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen you go in the middle’.

“He never gave it away, what a great lad. I tell you what, is he out of contract at the end of the year?

“I think they’re discussing whether they’re going to give him another deal.

“He’s 37, and I tell you what, you’d take him. Even if you were Liverpool, you’d take him back at Tottenham.

“He’d come in and he’s so great around the place, and he plays every minute of every game, and he’s still a fantastic player. I loved him, he’s low maintenance, just lives for football.”

Liverpool, who are well aware of Modric’s quality having been beaten by Real Madrid in four of their last six Champions League campaigns, are set to explore the market for midfield reinforcements this summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s top target is Jude Bellingham but in the view of Redknapp, Modric is a name they should certainly be looking at if he does become available.

Klopp recently snapped when he was asked by a Spanish reporter whether he would extend Modric’s contract if he was manager of Real Madrid.

The German replied: “Oh, god. You obviously are not too interested in my problems, so this is not one of my problems.”

He later added: “Yeah, fantastic player and I’m pretty sure Carlo [Ancelotti] and Real Madrid will do the right thing for the right player.”

Modric has also been very complimentary of his former boss Redknapp in recent months, declaring he had been essential to his development during the Croat’s time in north London.

“Very important, great guy, great coach. He gives every player so much confidence in him, that is amazing,” Modric said of the English boss.

“I remember when he put me in the middle, after Gareth [Bale] changed from left-back to left-winger, we had Aaron Lennon on the right and the two strikers had a lot of speed in the team. I remember he used to sing ‘give the ball to Luka’. He makes you feel important. He gives you so much confidence.

“These four years that we played with him, that he was our coach, it was so good. We played so well. Unfortunately we couldn’t win something but because your team [Man Utd] at the time were very strong, other teams were very strong and we couldn’t but we played some great football at the time.”
