Virgil van Dijk still 'determined to play for Holland at the Euros'

Virgil van Dijk is still ‘determined to play for Holland at this summer’s European Championships’, despite Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp claiming it’s ‘unlikely’ defender will feature as he continues to work his way back from horror knee injury

  • Virgil van Dijk has not given up on playing for Holland at the Euros this summer
  • Had been expected that he would miss all of this season with serious knee injury
  • Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has said it’s unlikely defender will be able to feature
  • Holland’s first game is less than eight months after van Dijk suffered injury

Virgil van Dijk and Jurgen Klopp could clash over the defender’s desire to still play in the European Championships this summer.

The 29-year-old Liverpool centre back has been on the sidelines since suffering a serious knee injury against Everton in October, with it previously believed that he would not play again this season.

But according to the Mirror, Van Dijk has not given up on featuring for Holland this summer in the Euros, a target likely to concern Klopp looking ahead to next season.

Virgil van Dijk is reportedly still determined to feature for Holland at this summer’s Euros

Jurgen Klopp’s preference is for his captain to focus on a full pre-season at Liverpool instead

The Liverpool manager’s preference is for his defender to focus on recovering in time to have a full pre-season with his club, with an eye to returning to the pitch at the start of next campaign.

Van Dijk’s desire to represent his country in a major tournament is understandably strong though, and it remains to be seen how much of a risk the defender is willing to take with his fitness.

Holland’s first match in this summer’s competition is against Ukraine in Amsterdam on June 13, less than eight months after van Dijk suffered his injury, before two further games at ‘home’ against Austria and North Macedonia in the group stages.

Earlier this month Klopp made it clear that he expected both van Dijk and Joe Gomez to miss the Euros due to the severity of their injuries and the length of recovery needed.

Van Dijk has not played since suffering a horror knee injury against Everton last October

‘To be honest the information I have at the moment, it will be unlikely (they will play in the Euros),’ said Klopp. ‘Not that I wouldn’t let them go but because of the extent of the injuries.

‘It’s not about talking which competition they can play in. As far as I know, and I am always open for positive surprises and they all of a sudden show up in training, nobody told me (they are nearly ready).

‘We all hope they will be ready to start the pre-season with us. These are really serious injuries.

‘Joe is starting running, Virgil is already running but this is really a tough one. We are completely over the moon when they are ready to train with us for the start of pre-season. The Euros, I didn’t think about it.

‘I understand the wishes but we can not make this decision and we will not. It is just when they will be fit.’

Klopp has said recently that he thinks it’s unlikely Van Dijk or Joe Gomez will be fit for the Euros
