What specialist doctors told Joe Gomez after Liverpool star twisted his knee

Liverpool received some form of good news after specialist doctors told Joe Gomez his season is not necessarily over.

The 23-year-old was injured just days after joining the England national team in training.

It was declared a 'serious knee injury' and immediate fears thought it could be the same as Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutchman has been ruled out for the rest of the season while Jurgen Klopp would be having kittens if both his top defenders were out.

With Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold also out, Liverpool's defence is in tatters.

But there was a small ray of sunshine when doctors revealed Gomez could still play a role this season, according to Sky Sports.

It came after he underwent successful surgery on his knee to fix a tendon, which also revealed there was no ligament damage.

Gomez has returned to Liverpool where he will begin a rehabilitation programme.

The Reds released a statement reading: "Liverpool Football Club can confirm Joe Gomez has today undergone successful surgery to repair a tendon in his left knee.

"The centre-back sustained the injury during a training session with the England national team on Wednesday.

"The issue was isolated to Gomez's tendon, with no damage to any other associated knee ligaments.

"The operation to correct the damage, which took place in London on Thursday morning, was a success and the 23-year-old will make a full recovery.

"Gomez will begin a rehabilitation programme with the Reds' medical team immediately, with club staff carefully monitoring his progress.

"No timescale is being placed upon his return, though the issue is likely to rule him out for a significant part of the remainder of 2020-21."

Whether Liverpool make amendments in the transfer window in January remains to be seen.

There were rumours flying after Van Dijk's injury and they will surely grow now Gomez has been crocked too.

RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano is high on the shortlist, as is Brighton star Ben White.

But Schalke's Ozan Kabak is reportedly top of the wish list after his club dropped his price.
