Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has fired back at his Barcelona counterpart Ronald Koeman after the Dutchman waded into a penalty debate following their 3-1 win over Eibar on Sunday.

Los Blancos won their fifth game in a row thanks to goals from Karim Benzema, Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez, despite the home side threatening a comeback after Kike made it 2-1 in the first half.

Eibar were trailing by just the one goal when the ball appeared to strike Sergio Ramos’ hand in the area, but VAR failed to intervene – with Vasquez wrapping up the game by netting in stoppage time.

The Barcelona boss claimed Eibar deserved a penalty in their 3-1 defeat on Sunday

The home side threatened a comeback before Lucas Vazquez (R) sealed victory late on

Koeman decided to give his views on the incident while speaking to the media: ‘For my part, I think it is a penalty, but that is all. The referee and his VAR team decided otherwise, and I respect that. But yes, if they ask me then yes, it’s a penalty.’

His words have not been well received by rival boss Zidane, who insisted he would ‘never get involved’ with a discussion around refereeing decisions.

‘It has been annoying because I never get involved with the referees,’ he said.

Sergio Ramos appeared the handle the ball in the area with Eibar trailing by just one goal

Zidane said referees had a tough job and he would never get involved with discussions

‘I think the referees are in charge of the game and they do a good job. Like everyone here, they just try to do their job. I never get involved with them. It’s a very difficult job.

‘What Koeman said I’m not going to get into that. We have an important game tomorrow [against Granada], a very demanding game, and that’s the only thing we’re thinking about.’

Los Blancos will be hoping for a sixth successive win over Granada on Wednesday, and Zidane said the team need to stay focused to maintain their impressive form after a poor spell at the start of the campaign.

‘The only thing we’re interested in is tomorrow’s game. That’s what interests us. It’s very important to us. We have to be concentrated.

Zidane came up against Koeman in October and beat his Barcelona side 3-1 at the Nou Camp

‘The most important thing for us is just to keep doing what we’re doing now. We’re in very good form and [will] try to win all three points tomorrow.’

Zidane locked horns with Koeman in October, with his side running out 3-1 winners at the Nou Camp. Madrid are currently joint-top of LaLiga alongside local rivals Atletico Madrid on 29 points.

Barcelona, who have also endured a poor campaign, are in fifth place on 21 points – eight points behind the leaders.
