UFC Vegas 5 Fight Night Brunson vs Shahbazyan: Trevin Giles faints

The UFC’s Vegas 5 Fight Night card is falling apart with multiple fights being scrapped at the last second.

The UFC was forced to scramble on Saturday to replace fighters the day before the event with two fighters replaced and a third fight cancelled completely.

The hits kept coming on Sunday when two more fights were cancelled at the last second, including the main card opener between Trevin Giles and Kevin Holland.

It was announced just minutes before the main card was due to open that Giles had fainted behind the scenes, triggering a decision from the Nevada State Athletic Commission to scrap the fight.

The dramatic incident was revealed on the live ESPN broadcast.

UFC presenter Heidi Androl said: “Trevin Giles was in the hallway getting ready to make the walk. Then fainted. The commission has scrapped this fight. It will no longer go on.

“I believe it was just nerves, but unfortunately for Kevin Holland, this fight is off.”

Reports emerged minutes later that Giles was in good health and did not feel ill until his fainting episode.

It came after Ed Herman and Gerald Meerschaert fight was also scrapped on Sunday as a result of a positive COVID-19 test.

Meerschaert tested positive, despite having a series of tests in the days leading up to the event, which all returned negative results.

“Tested positive for Covid so fights off. Feel healthy and will do everything I can to keep it that way and keep those around me safe,“ Meerschaert posted on Twitter.

Star fighter Bobby Green also revealed after his big win over Lando Vannata that his fight also could have been scrapped after carrying a broken hand injury into his fight.

Green was medically cleared to step into the Octagon, despite suffering the serious hand injury during his camp for the Vegas 5 fight night.

UFC commentators were left reeling by the turbulent card.

Is this the most cursed fight card in the history of the UFC? #UFCVegas5. Feel awful for @Trailblaze2top

Maybe because I've been paying less attention, but it feels like we haven't had a UFC card fall apart as badly as this one in a long time. #UFCVegas5

This main card was scheduled to have six fights as of this morning and now it's down to four. We're in for an unintentionally early UFC night tonight. #UFCVegas5
