Tottenham signing Alejo Veliz was allegedly told ‘not to travel’ to London for his medical with Spurs following a cluster of last-minute hijack attempts. The highly-rated Argentine teenager has now completed a £13million move to Ange Postecoglou’s side after impressing the club’s scouts and recruitment team.

Veliz already has top-flight experience under his belt from Argentina but Postecoglou has warned supporters that he is a player for the future.

Although it could be a while until fans get the chance to see Veliz in action, they will be encouraged to hear that several big European clubs tried to snatch the forward at the eleventh hour.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that a number of sides tried to derail Veliz’s switch to Spurs as the player and his entourage prepared to fly to Europe.

“He will need some time, Alejo Veliz, but Tottenham feel they have signed a very important player,” said Romano on the Here We Go Podcast.

We’ve just got to let him settle, he’s come halfway around the world.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. He’s one we’ll invest in in the long-term but I wouldn’t expect him to see any minutes in the first part of the season.”

Veliz’s numbers suggest he has a high ceiling which is something Tottenham evidently believe having sanctioned a credible transfer fee to land the player.

He struck 11 times in 23 Argentine Primera Division matches last season having netted eight times the previous campaign.

As displayed this season, Spurs are partial to the signing of a young player with star potential.

Pape Matar Sarr is now a regular first-teamer following his transfer from Metz and Postecoglou sees something he likes in the Senegal maestro.

Sarr has had to bide his time for opportunities and could have left the club to pursue regular football elsewhere.

Instead, he has stuck at it and now he is getting his rewards after netting in the 2-0 win over Manchester United.

Spurs now have a young, promising side under Postecoglou and he is clearly not shy to hand out opportunities where he feels they’re warranted.
