<\/p>\nTop-flight football could be back on the agenda for Gylfi Sigurdsson after one manager said he was 'optimistic' about signing the player this summer.<\/p>\n
The 78-cap Iceland international was released by Premier League outfit Everton in the summer of 2022 and hasn't played a competitive game since. However, that could all be set to change after Danish outfit Lyngby arose as his next possible destination.<\/p>\n
The Vikings play in Denmark's Superliga and are looking to make strides after finishing 10th out of 12 teams last season. And their manager has given an encouraging account of their Sigurdsson pursuit, with the 33-year-old in the frame to make a return to play after a long absence.<\/p>\n
"There is always hope," Freyr Alexandersson told Danish outlet Bold amid talk of a move for the former Toffee. "We are in good dialogue with Gylfi, so right now I'm optimistic that it can happen.<\/p>\n

"But right now there is nothing in place. So we just have to give him a few weeks so he can work on those things in relation to his body. So let's look at it within two\/three weeks."<\/p>\n
Lyngby are already one month into their domestic season and sit seventh in the Superliga standings. However, like the rest of Europe's major leagues, the summer transfer window won't shut until September 1.<\/p>\n

Sigurdsson – who turns 34 next month – may be out of practice but was once considered to be among Europe's best players in his position. The playmaker featured for Reading and Hoffenheim before exploding in popularity during a six-month loan at Swansea City in 2012.<\/p>\n
He later moved to Tottenham before finding his way back to south Wales, helping the Swans avoid relegation prior to joining Everton in 2017. The puppeteer spent five years on Merseyside before eventually being released last summer, though his last competitive appearance was all the way back in May 2021.<\/p>\n

The Reykjavik native has made 318 appearances in the Premier League and is still eligible to represent Iceland's national team. Head coach Age Hareide said earlier this year the door to an international return could still be open for Sigurdsson despite his spell out of the sport. <\/p>\n
Lyngby are already outperforming compared to last season and have earned as many wins in five games as it took them to accumulate in 21 last term. The club already has one Icelandic name Premier League fans will recognise in the form of Andri Gudjohnsen – son of former Chelsea and Barcelona star Eidur – who is on loan from Norrkoping.<\/p>\n
