Chris Sutton admitted he was surprised that Liverpool chose to prioritise moves for Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai over a deeper-lying defensive midfielder this summer.

Speaking on the latest episode of Mail Sport’s new preview podcast ‘It’s All Coming Up’ joined by Ian Ladyman, Sutton expressed his confusion over the Reds’ transfer plans this summer as they set about rebuilding their midfield.

Liverpool had looked close to deals for both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia throughout the summer, only to be beaten to the punch by Chelsea for both stars, in a high-profile defeat in the transfer market to one of their biggest rivals.

Liverpool lost both Fabinho and captain Jordan Henderson to the Saudi Pro League, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner all left the club on free transfers at the end of the last campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were quick to seal moves for both Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, before bringing in former Stuttgart midfielder Wataru Endo for £16million, but there are still questions over whether they have adequately shored up the base of their midfield three.

As a result, Sutton was admittedly surprised that the Ecuadorian, who has been pursued by a number of top clubs for several months, was not made a ‘priority’ this summer.

‘I still think that Liverpool are short in that position,’ he began. ‘Endo coming in – I don’t think he’s the answer to that holding midfield position. He’s not the Fabinho in terms of, he’s not necessarily dynamic, I don’t think he will give the back four the defensive cover they need, and I don’t think he’ll play a lot in truth.

‘I think it’s odd, and I’ll tell you why. If you look at Liverpool on the face of it, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai look like good signings, but really the one position they needed to nail this summer was that defensive midfield position. And I don’t think that they have done that.

‘So I’m surprised that they didn’t go for Caicedo first. That’s not giving Mac Allister or Szoboszlai a kicking, good signings as they are. I’m Just surprised that they didn’t go for Caicedo and make him top priority.’

Caicedo’s was one of the longer transfer sagas that drew the eye throughout the summer window before it ultimately drew to a close with both Liverpool and Chelsea tabling bids.

However despite putting in a £111m offer before the Blues, Caicedo rejected Liverpool, hoping to secure a move to Stamford Bridge instead of Anfield.

It was not the dream start to his career in blue that Caicedo may have hoped for when Chelsea took on West Ham at the weekend, though.

The Ecuadorian was lazy in a challenge late in the game inside his own box to give away a penalty, allowing Hammers’ star Lucas Paqueta to wrap up the three points in a stunning 3-1 win.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s arrival from RB Leipzig has added further depth in the middle and he can also play out wide

But Sutton was however optimistic about the impression that Szoboszlai can make, saying: ‘From what I’ve seen of him at Leipzig and Salzburg before, it’s interesting in the fact he’s a more offensive-minded player than defensive-minded player. I know he played as a defensive midfielder at the weekend, But he’s not one, certainly not one in the Fabinho mold.

‘In terms of comparing him to the likes of Jordan Henderson, technically I think he’s far ahead of Henderson. But that defensive discipline and that defensive match, I’m not so sure that he possesses that at this moment in time. But he’s still a young player and that will come.

‘I think his versatility is a massive, massive strength for Liverpool and he can play off both sides in the wide areas and in that central area. But it’ll be interesting to see how Jurgen Klopp uses him.’
