Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that Luke Shaw’s injury is worse than the one suffered by team-mate Mason Mount.

Shaw has picked up a muscle injury and could now be out for around two months when it is taken into consideration that Mount is sidelined for up to six weeks with a hamstring problem.

United have a problem at left-back as in addition to Shaw’s absence, Tyrell Malacia is also struggling with a knee injury.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the game against Nottingham Forest, Ten Hag said: ‘Luke will be longer than Mason. It’ll also take a few weeks before Tyrell will be back. Definitely we have the solutions in our squad to cope with that. You hope to avoid this scenario but if it happens you have to be ready for it.’

Ten Hag has injury issues to contend with ahead of United’s game against Nottingham Forest

United issued a statement regarding Shaw’s injury on their official website on Thursday night, which read: ‘Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has sustained an injury which will rule him out of forthcoming games.

‘The muscle issue is still being assessed but the England left-back is expected to be out of action for a number of weeks.

‘United are currently preparing for Saturday’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.’

There are concerns that Mount could be out for longer than first feared with the hamstring injury that he picked up against Tottenham.

Initial tests indicated the £55million signing from Chelsea faced three weeks out and would be back just after the international break.

There are concerns, however, that he could be out for up to six weeks which would see him miss the visit of Brighton after the international break and potentially United’s first Champions League group game as well as the next two matches against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal.

United are also still waiting for striker Rasmus Hojlund, who cost £72million from Atalanta, to be fully fit.
