Eddie Howe says he would never be friends with Jurgen Klopp or any other Premier League manager because of his competitive nature.

Newcastle and Liverpool renew hostilities at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon with their rivalry having intensified since the former’s Saudi-led takeover in 2021.

Klopp sarcastically congratulated the Magpies on their limitless spending power last season and Howe responded by warning the German to be ‘careful’ over the ‘accuracy’ of his comments.

This came on the back of angry exchanges between the respective dugouts when Liverpool beat Newcastle with a 98th-minute winner at Anfield one year ago. However, it was Newcastle who eventually pipped the Reds into fourth position to qualify for this season’s Champions League.

Eddie Howe and Jurgen Klopp had a tense encounter on the touchline last time the two met

And when pressed on his relationship with Klopp on Friday, Howe said: ‘I don’t really have a relationship with any manager, I’m competing against them.

‘I find it very difficult to have personal relationships with competitors. I’ve been the same as a player. I was not one to talk to players before a game. I draw a line, and so that is just how I have always been.

‘I respect Jurgen a lot. I think he’s done an incredible job. He’s an unbelievable football manager but I draw the line at friendships because they don’t exist for me.’

He added: ‘When you grow up in a house of three brothers and a sister, I think naturally you just compete for everything. You are fighting for attention I suppose. You are fighting for anything. Then, you start to play little games which I would create, games with my brothers which I would want to win, so maybe it’s gone from there.

‘There’s no such thing as a friendly, even now with my kids, I’ve got to try and win. That is built in me somehow.’

Klopp commented on Newcastle again last week by claiming Howe and assistant Jason Tindall would be most affected by new rules preventing two coaches from standing together on the touchline.

Was Howe amused by Klopp’s words?

Nick Pope was given a straight red card in the last game when the two sides met in February

Liverpool came away 2-0 winners at St James’ with Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez both scoring

‘I wouldn’t say I laugh at the comments,’ he said. ‘Other people can have opinions. That’s fine. I’ve got no issue with that. You just sort of roll with it, let it go and just talk about my team.’

Liverpool have spent in excess of £100million this summer and were prepared to take that beyond £200m following their offer for Moises Caicedo.

What did Howe think of that, given Klopp’s previous claims of not being able to compete with Newcastle in the transfer market?

‘I know what you want me to say!’ he replied. ‘The dynamic of football changes so quickly in terms of transfer fees. This time last year we were talking different levels of money and, in a year, they have jumped so high. For everybody, not just for us. I would never talk about another club openly, it’s nothing to do with me and none of my business what others clubs do. I can only talk about what we do.’
